Hi guys, been lurking this great resource for some time now and finally decided to post.
Sept is a very good time to come - it will still be hot, but not quite as crowded in the parks and popular destinations (a little cheaper too, but this is still an expensive place).
You don't say where in the US - it's HUGE to say the least.
My favorites: San Francisco, Honolulu, Portland, NYC, New Orleans & Washington
(I strongly suggest you drive here - public transportation is nothing like the UK)
I also think the Grand Canyon , Lake Powell area (near to Grand Canyon), Las Vegas, and Sedona areas (all in the southwest) are worth visiting.
As Daawgon said, distances here are huge--and even when you rent a car, be sure to fill up often if in a very rural area. In the southwest portion of the US you can drive for seven hours straight and only pass one or maybe two gas stations.
