Travelling To Perth (WA) 25th Aug (3weeks)

steveosargent has indicated that this thread is about Perth

Ask your friend to try and find you some work. If you have none and can't afford to pay him, that does not help him.

Perth is a major city and expensive to stay in. You would have serious trouble finding another place at that price, and hopefully you will have access to cooking facilities and a fridge (?) which will be a big help where eating out is expensive.

You could do a round of the work agencies when you arrive, or even email some of them now.

If customs questions you on arrival, best to have a credit card or two and claim you have a fair amount of money on them as they like entrants to have sufficient money. Tell them you have someone to go to. If he is not waiting for you at the airport, make sure you have all his personal details as they turn back and send home people who they think do not have enough money and no accommodation to go to, etc. Tell them your friend has some possible jobs lined up for you, and email him to back up the story if they ask him. This site might help:

No offence meant as I do not know you but try and look fairly smart for the customs, and be nice to them (they are not a bad lot), even if you don't feel like it after a LONG flight. It's not just drugs (a dog sniffs all passengers and your luggage will be x-rayed). Many people try to bring food into Australia. They will find it and they take it very seriously and that's A$220 fine and a black mark on your record straight away.

If you do fairly well you will earn enough to get by but don't think you can start saving lots of money for when you return home.

Having said that, if you want to earn some real money and don't mind some fairly hard work:

.

Yeh i speak to my friend daily so he wont have any problem with helping me out with customs etc, I wont be able to take credit cards as i doubt il get approved one (bad credit) from a when i was a little younger.

I work as a IT professional in England and have various qualifications and 2 years experience behind me but i believe i won't be able to find IT employment due to the type of Visa i will be holding.

My friend suggests i do a white card? I don't mind labouring i done it when i was younger is there alot of labouring work in Australia? and is it good money?

When looking for work i want to be able to fund my holiday and travel around but also have enough to live and enjoy.

what kind of employment should i be looking for?

thank you for replying,....I really appreciete it.

Steve

Finding work in IT on a WHV is totally doable. Lots of people around who'll be willing to give you a break because they were backpackers themselves not too long ago. There's no restrictions on the type of work you can do on a WHV - besides not being allowed to work for more than 6 months for the same employer, but that's totally fine in IT, where most projects last just a few weeks to a few months anyway. Besides this, Australia has a culture of freelancing in IT, which makes things even easier. (Speaking from personal experience here.)

Don't worry about Cyberia's scaremongering about customs either. Yes, they're strict about importing fruits and meat, but no, they don't check up on your financial situation when you're on a WHV (as far as my personal experience goes, backed up by hundreds of reports on these forums over the years from other people on WHVs; as an immigration expert who used to frequent these forums tended to say, "backpackers are considered low risk"). Don't look like a total bum and you'll just be waved through with a "welcome to Australia".

That said, the WHV eligibility requirement of AUD $5000 of available funds is there for your own protection; finding work "immediately" tends to be not that easy (though it varies from person to person), and most backpackers end up needing at least this much...

Thank you Sander,

Im in a good situation i have 2 different friends in Perth and im really looking foward to getting out and partying and exploring etc, Ive promised my self i won't do this until i am working Im glad i might be able to work in IT as its a fast moving industry and was skeptical of taking a year out,

where do i look for these jobs? I hear gum tree is good for back packers and i have been emailing people on there but is that the only site you guys use?

I don't know where Australian sysadmins hang out, but they'll undoubtedly have a forum, trade organization or something similar where they congregate (think regional versions of hacker news, slashdot or serverfault), and that'll have an attendant job board. That's what you should find, and that's where you should hang out at. might also be worth keeping an eye on, though in my experience that's mostly used by big recruiters, who'll filter out overseas candidates - versus the small guys who're looking for people directly, and are more likely to give overseas candidates a break.
