A year is a long time so you'll be able to make the most of your trip. I'd probably start in Sydney and travel up the east coast, it's a fairly popular route so you'll get to meet people and make plans for the rest of your travel. I'd look at doing an anti-clockwise trip of Australia, loosely I'd aim to spend April-September in the desert and North end (draw a line horizontally through the middle of Australia) and the rest of the year in the south part. If you need to work it's probably easiest to get in more populated areas such as the east coast.
For travelling you could start off with a hop on hop off Greyhound bus pass and if you meet people interested in hiring/buying a van you could consider that for the rest of your trip.
