Me and a friend are heading to Chicago right after Christmas until Jan.2
According to me Wicker park is the best spot for you . thus you can easily enjoy your new year in Chicago.
"Chicago weather in January is definitely on the frigid side, with the daily temps rarely go above the freezing mark. Many longtime Chicago residents can recount many times the wind chill in January has dipped well below zero (the record being minus 93 degrees)"

My Trip to Chicago was a rousing success! I won't go into details too much but Wicker Park was an awesome place to stay. The Public transportation was easy to figure out and there was a lot to do. I got around to a few of the touristy bits but mostly stayed around wicker park the whole week and went out to bars and restaurants in that neighborhood where a few of them stay open until 4 or 5am.
My only complaint is that it was ridiculously cold though. I was thinking it was only going to be slightly colder than Philly or NYC but ... the temps there are misleading as none of them factor in the horribly cold breeze coming in off of the lake. When I got back to Philly it was like 30-35 and I was walking out of the airport without a jacket
But yeah definitely a fun city with an interesting take on pizza and hot dogs, a couple of awesome museums and some really cool neighborhoods. I'll definitely be going back when it's warmer.
Where did you go for pizza? (Please don't say Uno's Due's or Gino's...)
Most bars are only required to be closed between 5 and 7 am. State law requires bars to be closed for only 2 hours during a 24 hour period.
Cold? You ain't seen cold until it's below zero here. You arrived during a winter 'heat wave'!! But, I also remember Christmas Eve/Day being either -25 or +60. People were in bathing suits on Oak Street Beach when it was 65F. Okay, no one was in the lake.
So glad you enjoyed your visit. Wicker Park is awesome. It's changed a lot since I lived in the area. You took your life in your own hands back then. Says something about how long ago that was...
Yeah everyone was saying that it is a mild winter. With the windchill it had to be right around 0 degrees. That's too cold for me haha.
For pizza - Giordano's was decent for deep dish. Thought it felt more like lasagna than pizza to be honest. We stumbled into D'Agostino's on our first day. I don't know if it was famous or well known but the bartender there was great and just gave us a lot of info about the city, and they had thin crust that was pretty good. Piece was decent too, that was more like east coast style but that place was great for micro brews.
