Since the place you will be working at will be out of Zone 1-2, the costs should be considerably cheaper than if you were to stay in central London.
I would think London is comparable in terms of cost of living with Sydney, so you should be accustomed to it. I live in Singapore and I didn't find grocery shopping too expensive in London. Transport can add up to quite a bit if you were to commute on a daily basis, to and from work. To keep costs low, I would suggest trying to find accommodation at a location near your workplace, so that you can walk or cycle to work!
I think you should start looking for accom on craigslist or similar sites. Those require a lot more searching and coordinating with hosts, but it might work out cheaper. Alternatively, sites like roomorama and airbnb might turn out something useful for you. For example:

Do note that Airbnb and Roomorama has some charges to book, but it's pretty affordable in the grand scheme of things. Nothing too ridiculous!
Public transport costs: . Fares per trip could range from £2 onwards, I believe. But per day costs are capped at £7.80.
Sounds okay for a day out on a weekend, but you might not necessarily want to pay this amount to get to work daily, so again, try to cut costs by staying near your workplace! (Means you can sleep in more too, hehe)
I can't advise you on the amount spent on groceries, cos I think it's really subjective! Depends on how much you eat, or what kind of stuff you'd like to cook with. But I generally find prices okay, though vegetables and fruits are quite a bit more expensive than what I am used to.

I will look into Oyster Cards for sure! And think that finding a family to 'host' me is my cheapest option right now as they charge around 20 - 30 GBP per day which works out cheaper than renting a room i think.

SRenae, with the exchange rate the way it is at the moment, the costs of day to day stuff in London is not very expensive compared to what it's been in the past. Having returned from a brief trip to London a few weeks back (but having spent 3 years there some time ago) I think you'll find things a bit cheaper than Sydney.
Your specific questions are more difficult to answer, however the cost of the tube is roughly about the same as the train in Sydney. Groceries are a fair bit cheaper though. The homestay at 20-30 pounds per night sounds like good value.
By the way, I'm also from Sydney so I know how expensive this place is. Overall, for what you're doing, I'd say London is a bit cheaper.
