Hello there, I am new to travellers point so I'm still trying to work out the nuts and bolts of it. I am currently planning a trip following the Silk Road starting in June 2013 at Istanbul and finishing in China. I am extremely excited by the prospect. However, as a young British girl travelling by myself I am slightly concerned that I may just be asking for trouble. Has anyone got any experience with this particular route or the countries that it goes through? I am resigned to the fact that it is impossible to get a visa for Iran and I'd rather avoid Afghanistan and Pakistan. Instead, I was thinking of going through Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. Would it be less of a problem taking this route? If I was going to travel with someone would it be better if it was a man or a woman? Thank you!
Hi, I made a trip from Dushanbe to Kunming in this summer. You can ask me whatever you want about Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and a part of China.
Cheers
Thank you! So in your opinion do you think that it would be safe as a girl travelling alone through the 'stans' and China?
In my opinion safety of going alone through the "stans" depends of they way how you wanna do it. If you wanna use public transport (but for example in Pamir there is no public transport) it's OK, but If you think about hitchhiking alone, maybe It's not good idea. I was travelling with a partner. I speak russian so we didn't have any problems with conversation with locals in Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan - It helps very much. Almost all people were very friendly, especially in Tajikistan.
In China - I think there will be no problem of travelling alone.
what car are you going to be usin on the trip. i'm working on getting a cousin a new nissan out to france.
Thank you kuba_c, that's very helpful.
briando I am not actually going to be using a car, I was thinking of using public transport where possible and then joining onto groups when it was necessary.
Hey! Did you end up doing this trip? If so, you are probably in the middle of it! I am a 24-yr-old Irish female and plan on travelling alone from SE Asia to Europe along a similar route to you I think. Any tips or advice would be much appreciated as I am in planning phase now! :-) Meadhbh

I dont know about the Stans, but China is probably one of the safest countries to travel in there is. Goes both for men and women. So, if you are not afraid to travel alone through London than you should certainly not be afraid to travel alone through China.
