You do realize you'll need a working Visa, this could take time to get!!
If you are caught working that if you can get a job without one you will be in trouble.
You should apply online we got our tourist Visa this way it was straight forward.
Flights check out Thomas Cook they will research all the airlines for you and try for a discount they can say no but you might get something knocked off.
You don't say how long you are going for and how much you have saved.
Limited funds doesn't sound good, OZ is not a cheap country, what happens if you can't find work?
Traveling is not just about taking your passport and a backpack you need to think this thru being without sufficient funds is not a good start whatever people might say.
In the 1960s I hitched round Europe and had to sell my blood to get money it's not a good situation to be in take it from me.

Use the government website. All other sites basically prey on the uncertainty of travellers who don't know how easy it is to get the WHV yourself, or to set up a bank account and similar things yourself in Australia, charging you a hefty premium for letting you fill in a web form with the same information on their site, rather than on the official site.
- Im hoping to find a safe place to stay, perhaps on southern Gold Coast, which can offer me access to the beach and scenic walks but also the opportunity to find work and meet new friends. I think i would feel unsafe in Surfers and also im not into living in a built up area but obviously will have to make compromises to be successful in my trip anyone have much experience living on the Gold Coast?
I know your funds are limited and all, but I'd strongly recommend travelling around at least a little bit to find out which places of the country you like for yourself, rather than relying on recommendations from people who might have a completely different set of priorities and likes than you do.

Most Working Holiday Visas are approved within 24 hours; it never takes more than a week nowadays. (Yes, a regular Work Visa takes forever, but on this forum, almost everyone is going to Australia under the age of 31, and going for a WHV.)
Thanks for advice i will definately be getting my WHV from the government website, just waiting on my passport being delivered.
As for travelling about more. My plan was to set up base in gold coast and try get settled in a share house, i can always take small trips from there.

Yeah, I'm just saying: maybe the Gold Coast wouldn't be your preferred location within Australia to stay for a longer amount of time, once you've seen a few other places. I know it wouldn't be for me, but I also know that tastes in this differ wildly. And $4000 isn't that bad on the money front. You should be able to travel about for 4-6 weeks before having to decide where to settle down and start working.

Thanks for advice I have researched quite a lot on where i think i could settle most. My take on southern gold coast makes me think i would like it there. Lovely beaches, coastal walks, hot climate and not too built up and a more relaxed style of living i.e. away from city life but with enough round about for entertainment and work purposes. Do you think this is a fair assessment? I would take any advice on board, as i am keen to get a good understanding of where i will call home in 2012
