Hi I'm 25, from Reading UK and travelling alone to Thailand - hoping there are other lonely travellers landing around the same time, and equally as nervous as me that might want to meet up.
Hey Katie, relax, you are going to be just fine. There is a good chance you will meet someone on your flight, or maybe a couple and can all travel together into Bangkok. If not then still relax and just budget a little extra money to get you through your first couple of days.
Splurge and take a cab from the airport to your guest house (do you have one booked?) that way you don't have to deal straight away with strange or uncomfortable situations right after a long flight. If you are heading to Khao San Rd, the most popular of the backpacker areas, then the cab will run you about 500thb which is about 10 pounds. If you don't have a room booked I'd recommend you do that for at least the first night or two just so you feel more comfortable on arriving and having an address to go to.
I find Khao San to be a bit over the top crazy for me. Nice to walk through and gawk but I wouldnt want a guest house right there. I found Soi rambuttri a much nicer area. Soi means alley and its a lovely alley with street vendors with great food, cheapish guest houses, and restaurants and bars with loads of people to mix and meet with. Just tell your cab driver to take you to Soi Rambuttri and he can only drop you off at one end of it, which is closest to Koa San Rd, a minutes walk away.
After you get settled in, I guarantee that unless you are some sort of social leper you will meet people to travel with.
Good luck and have fun.
