we are looking for a place to stayin new orleans over superbowl or mardi gras or both! can someone pls point us in the direction of a hostel/ campground/someones couch that isnt booked out PLEASE!!
Unless you have a decent budget you've left it way, way too late for all the "usual" avenues. I suggest you get on the social networks and places like couchsurfing and start begging.

hey i just stumbled across a blog which gave me a great idea, over the 2 weekends of the bowl and mardi gras we can just sleep in our van and stay at a hostel during the middle of the week

Hey Terry do you have any idea if we would be able to go to the tailgate party for the bowl? also what is the alcohol situation like on mardi gras? are we better off keeping our own cold?
No clue what the tailgate situation is in New Orleans but at other Superbowls (I've been to two) no one was allowed into the parking lots without Tailgate Tickets and security was super strict.
No worries about keeping your drinks cold. There is booze EVERYWHERE at Mardi Gras, it's super easy to find a fresh/cold one.

Would it be worth getting tailgate tickets if we arent going into the game?
I googled it and theres tailgate parties in different bars n that, and by tailgate party i mean the party in the parkinglot of the stadium before the game.

In my opinion nothing beats the real tailgate party right at the stadium. The so-called "tailgate parties" at the bars are nothing compared to what goes down in the parking lots.
That said, unless you're a football fan or you find American football culture interesting (it's a love-it-or-hate-it deal) then I suspect it'll be a fairly boring (and expensive) endeavour.
