Where do I start?

I made my first post here over 4 months ago but alas, I still have no real idea of where I want to go or what I want to do. I have been saving though, and I'm probably looking at a minimum budget of around £20,000 (the amount could really vary but that's my minimum target) and I'm hoping to be away for about a year.

Cameron, in my opinion you are way, waaaay over thinking this. You're not contemplating anything unique or odd, you're following in the footsteps of countless others who've done the very same thing over the course centuries.

Here's my advice: Take 2 - 4 weeks and go to Thailand. It has a different language and culture so it's completely foreign, but with one of the best backpacker infrastructures on the planet it's an easy, non-intimidating destination - and it's filled with new, inexperienced travellers just like you.

At the end of your trip I guarantee your angst will be gone... you will have figured out what makes travel great and you'll be dying to get back out on the road for your "real" trip asap... or you will have had enough. Either way is fine, different strokes for different folks.

Good luck and have fun. Safe travels.

Cheers,
Terry

You can start with India....
Come, Seek and Discover. Match India's rhythms to your heart, its colours to your mind, and find a travel experience that is yours alone. An India like no other. Friendly, warm, welcoming ... and uniquely your own.

Might be more money than you need if you're doing India. But yeah I won't call it over thinking because I've been there and I'd label it as more of excitement or eagerness. Just look through the travel blog community, the Internet is highly helpful when hammering out a rough trip plan. I don't know where you're from which helps suggesting a route. But if Europe, a India-Thailand- SE Asia route is good, SE Asia is good for first timers.
