I'm heading to Sydney at the beginning of April with a friend, we were hoping to stay there for 2/3 weeks then head up the Gold Coast and onto Brisbane for the winter months.
Haven't looked into the STA travel groups so can't comment on that but we were looking at the greyhound and possibly renting a campervan.
If you're travelling solo it's always good to meet like minded people up for going to the same places so just thought I'd mention our plans!
Oh and we're staying in hostels, most offer lockers to secure your things so shouldn't be anything to worry about. There are some really good ones in Sydney. Check hostelworld out online.

Have you been Australia before?
I've decided against the tour with STA, I've booked my flights so no going back now! Never been so excited for anything.
I've had a look into the Greyhound pass before but, ironically for someone who really wants to travel I am awful with travel sickness on coaches so I don't know if it would be suitable for me haha!
Was originally just going to get a train straight to Brisbane but, I really want to do Byron Bay and the 3 day Drop Bear Adventure tour of Fraser Island so I'm thinking of going to Byron first.
I think I'm going go into a hostel or at least try it out, looking at the YHA or WakeUp! hostel both seem to be quite good.
Keep underestimating the size of the country so much to explore, so little time

Hiya, I have booked to go to Oz mid April until end of May, plac was to travel from Brisbane up to Cairns and then see what happens, was thinking of Greyhound coaches and staying in hostels. I wasn't going to book the hostels until I arrived as not sure of the plans. Is that a bit dodgy am I unlikely to get a room?
