Rather vague question - which countries are you going to?
Argentina, Chile and Brazil are very expensive, with accommodation costs close to European ones. Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru are relatively cheap.
Are you travelling on a shoestring or will you be doing lots of excursions?
In Bolivia USD1,500 could last you a month with some trips, nice food and decent accommodation included. If you want to enjoy Argentina in the same way, that might not last you half as long!
