map view - wheres the cursor to move sideways?

hello, used to be able to zoom in and move around the map, now can only zoom in, but cant move left or right????

I swear - I haven't touched those zoom controls Can you get a screengrab of it so I know what you mean exactly?

hi peter, thanks speedy reply! will try to do that, can you tell me how???? basically i noticed that a couple of days ago, but thought it was me (being stupid!!)....but the round thing with the up down side to side arrows is gone....all there is is zoom in and zoom out....
screengrab? let me know. spiderface

Are you on a Mac or a PC?

I mainly use a program called which is available on both platforms. But there are built-in ways of doing it as well, so you don't really have to download anything.

mac, have taken a screen pic of the map....can i send that?

Yeah - if you like just send that through to me by email at peter @ travellerspoint.com

hi, thanks, have just sent it

hi peter, sorry to bother you when i know you have other stuff to do....any news on this? did you get my email? thanks a lot - s/face

Ah yeah - I sent an answer by email. Did it not arrive?

Anyway, I'll repeat here in case anyone else has a similar question and happens to also be using a Mac

So I think this is actually standard behaviour for google maps when the window is at a small enough size. Either that, or I made it standard in our implementation a long time ago to ensure the zoom controls don't take up too much space. Moving across the map can still be achieved by dragging the map, so this compact navigation element is considered an acceptable trade-off at small sizes.

A few things you can do.

1. Maximise that window as far as you can - use the browser's green button top left there to expand. Or sometimes that doesn't expand all the way - in which case you can use the resize handle (bottom right) to resize the window. It looks like it has room on your desktop to take up more space. This alone might fix it.

2. Increase your computer's resolution. You can do this in System Preferences > Display. I suspect yours is at 1152x720 (comparing to a MacBook here that seems about right). You can increase it to 1280x800 easily to get more room on your desktop. This will immediately also make our site font feel smaller! You can go even higher resolution if you really like things small.

3. You can hide the bottom application icons and have them only show when you hover over that area. To do this, go to System Preferences > Dock and tick the option to automatically hide and show the dock. This will allow you to make the browser window a bit bigger as well.

And come to think of it - I think this is something that I did intentionally. Sometimes our maps are shown at very small sizes (when embedded for example) where there definitely is not the room for those extra navigation controls.
