Hi there, I think 6000 pounds it should be enough till you find a job. My advice its to search for a room in a shared house(400-500 £ a month) so you have your privacy and a free mind and let's say another 300£ extra for you needs (so roughly around 7-8 months but can be a bit cheaper than that, depends on what kind of comfort do you like). One big advantage of this is the people who are sharing the house with you, they may give you a hand in finding a job as being locals and they know how to deal with it. Meanwhile you are looking for work, having submitted you CV all around the city you can do some volunteer work. The advantage while you do volunteer work is...you get your bus (train, metro) ticket paid and a free lunch meal and if you do 6 months volunteer work you get qualified for that kind of work...and again people from there they can give you some tips about finding work.

I did the same thing as you when I was 27 (from Sydney) and with no job secured, I had about £5000 with me. It took me just a little over a month before I got a job (already had interviews lined up) so, of course, your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking to do for work. I was also staying in a hotel on my own for the first week due to unforeseen circumstances, living quite close to the center of London. Eventually a friend hooked me up with a pad with 1 house mate for £450/month if I remember correctly.
I agree with what MrSyn said for the most part except, if this is your first time in London, I'm sure you wouldn't be restricting yourself too much with £300 for extra. Transportation alone - if you travel often enough - can get mighty expensive, even if you buy weekly tickets. As an example, I live in zone 3, and to get to work would require going into the center (zone 1) and buying a "cheaper" weekly pass on the Oyster Card would cost me a little over £35 per week. If you find a place in zone 2, your accessibility is far better, but it's not that much cheaper. Again, it depends on how much you depend on the buses/tube/overground trains. Just an extra FYI, if you do get a weekly pass on the Oyster Card, you can use it for either of those 3 public transport modes in unlimited quantities per day so long as it's between the zones you paid for.
If you're looking to do all the touristy stuff you should check out the London Pass to give you some discounted rates.
Personally, I came here looking for a job, but I also didn't want to restrict myself too much since I came all the way from the other side of the world, but just to give you an idea as your case may be different, it took a little over 2 months before I got my first paycheck and I had about £2000-2500 remaining.
