In Bangkok you can sign on to a tour through local travel agencies on short notice. Lots of choices for tours out of Bangkok and within the city area. Pick up and return to your hotel included.
You will meet other tourists on tours, in hotel lobbies, restaurants and in bars. You really don't need someone to buddy up with.
If you have random guests visit your hotel room make sure your wallet is locked up! Your passport, cell phone, laptop, money and other valuables should not be out in plain sight! When you go into the toilet or step out of sight your random guest can be long gone with everything of value!
Most hotels have safety boxes or even safes - use them!
