Solo Female Travelling

Hey guys, I wanted to ask a question, see normally I travel to different places with my friends, but lately I have developed a interest of solo travelling but before I start travelling solo, just wanted to ask how safe is it for a female to travel solo?
Thanks in advance

It's a safe as YOU make it.

There are countless ladies travelling solo all over the world, all the time. The vast majority have no issues whatsoever because they use their common sense and street smarts.

If you're a dummy then solo travel isn't for you unless you're only going to Disneyland.

Have fun.

Cheers,
Terry

"... If you're a dummy then solo travel isn't for you unless you're only going to Disneyland..."

That is of course a blanket statement and is in no way directed personally at you, haha!

Many women travel alone without any real problems. When I read about women getting trouble often drinking too much alcohol and then taking chances is part of the problem.

Drink too much alcohol and make stupid choices is something men and women do. In Asia when or if anyone, male or female, decides to have a random "friend" spend the night nothing bad may happen. Or he or she may wake up with all their money, passport, cell phone and everything you value missing along with your overnight "friend." For women Phuket gigolos and Bali Kuta Cowboys sometimes end up causing problems. Women may not report any crimes because of the publicity.

Don't become so lonely that you fall in love with someone you meet overseas and after you go home continue to send money to this person. This happens too often. This person may also have other people sending money too.

Always use the security box in your hotel room. Don't leave cash, cellphone, jewelry, etc. out in plain sight if anyone visits your room. I think it is better to not fully trust anyone unless you know this person from back home.

You must have some way of having money available when needed. Don't rely on a single source of money - like a debit card. That card may end up stolen or damaged. Have more than one source of spending money. You need to work up a budget. If you find that you are staying in lousy places all the time maybe have a shorter holiday where you have better accommodation. Don't bring precious family heirlooms with you or anything you will lose sleep over if they are stolen.

I have run across little old ladies on retirement pensions just having a nice time in Thailand. Going on tours, eating out, shopping, etc. Every now and then you see a drunk "younger" woman doing stupid things in public. I would expect the drunk to possibly have more problems than the little old lady!

Read up on scams for each country you visit.

Traveling is what you make of it.

Karazyal has excellent suggestions. I would one add thing. Dress conservatively, so as not to draw unwanted attention.

More women are traveling alone in recent years. And, you'll find that on "adventure" tours, women often outnumber men.

While many travelers focus on the dangers from "locals," you also should be aware that you also could be taken advantage of by fellow travelers. That has happened to me. I've noticed that many people seek out travel companions online. There are advantages and disadvantages to that. Personally, I think it would be wise to know, beforehand, something about the people you plan to be traveling with. It helps to have common interests; and a similar outlook on life. If it works out, fine; if it doesn't, have a contingency plan. Be flexible.

"Sharing and caring" should be the guiding principle of travel companions; and lasting friendships will result. Happy trails!
