Great sites in SW are Gulfoss waterfalls, Thingvellir Park and Geysir. A little bit farer you could go to see the nice landscapes of Landmanalaugar, Thorksmörk or Snaeffelsness peninsula.

I've heard that the life in Iceland is very expensive (sleep and food). You confirm this?

It was more than 25 years ago so I cannot really give you prices indications.
I just remember the food was expensive and not so much for sleeping as I was camping !
15-18 days gives you a fair bit of flexibility, but timing will depend on what you want to see, and the type of vehicle you're taking. If you want to do a multi-day trek, it'll cut into your time.
I'd highly recommend doing the loop around the ring road (but get off the ring road too!) - it's a lot of driving, but should be doable with your time frame (I did that and more in 15 days in Sept). Skaftafell in the east is supposed to be one of the most beautiful places (and one of the only ones I missed, unfortunately). Landmanlaugar is amazing - worth a go, but needs a 4 wheel drive vehicle. What are you most interested in seeing / doing? Are you looking for hikes, the hot springs/pools, do you want to see the highlands, etc. The landscape there changes incredibly fast, and it's impressive the amount of diversity you can see in just a couple of hours of traveling.
The whole island has landmarks and information scattered along the route, so it's really easy to see different things, and if you talk to locals on the way (they're really, really friendly!) they tend to be more than happy to give yo advice.

Yes Iceland is very expensive! About 3 times the price of things here in England.
As well as the good suggestions already, take a look at Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon, Myvatn Nature Baths in the north near Akureyri (like the Blue Lagoon spa), and the weirdest attraction in Reykjavik is the Penis Museum!

I would suggest doing your own itinerary. You want to be flexible to follow the weather. Spend you money on a car and save by either staying in Youth Hostels or if you are tough camping. Besides the price, the advantage of youth hostels is that they have a kitchen, so you can cook your own meals. Of course, if you have more cash you can upgrade to guesthouses, but there the breakfast is often at set times, which is not always handy
