Central or South America?

Hi there!

We had two months in South America last year travelling through Chile, Bolivia, Peru and Ecuador and ending up on the Galapagos Islands. Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador are very cheap for travellers and there's a great range of geographical diversity - the Atacama Desert, the Salt Flats, the Amazon Basin, Lake Titicaca, Colca Canyon, Machu Picchu, the Nazca Lines and some great cities too. Brazil and Argentina (and Chile) may be a little more expensive. The whole trip was absolutely brilliant, well worth it and fairly easy as a back-packer, especially if you know a little Spanish. With five months, you'll have a ball.

For six weeks at the end of this year we've chosen Central America - starting in Cuba and then going over to Mexico and down to Panama. Although the people and the scenery will be different, we expect the experience to be just as good.

Whatever you decide - enjoy!

There's really no comparison between the two destinations. South America is over 35 times larger with twice as many countries/dependencies.

If you have to choose between one or the other then South America offers countless more options.

Cheers,
Terry

With 5 - 6 months though I'd be doing a taste of both (especially the boat/overland route around the Darien Gap between Panama and Colombia) and for something completely different throwing in Cuba as well too (when Taca or Copa have a seat sale there's cheap flights from Guatemala, Panama and Colombia.)

I guess it would partially depend on your flights to and from home...

Cheers,
Terry
