It pays to register your travel plans with the government agency that deals with foreign affairs in your country. In the United States, it's the State Department. By registering, you'll be notified of developments that might affect travel in countries you plan to visit. For example, today I was notified that martial law was declared in Burkina Faso, which I plan to visit in December.
