Providing you are prepared to take the same simple, sensible precautions that you would take in any city, yes, it's very safe. Levels of personal crime are actually lower than our southern European neighbours.
I agree with markwillen. I would not hesitate to be alone in Marrakech, but be sensible. You can visit the food market on the big square and walk in the bazars alone with no problem. But avoid the small alleys without light. Have a great time and happy birthday!
