I'm doing kinda similar starting a week earlier, spending 5 weeks doing both islands on my second visit.
I looked at bus passes but decided I want a car to give me freedom to get to the start points for hiking, which is most of what I want to do this trip. I'm hoping to stop this being too lonely by hostelling, hopefully some people will want to go to the pub or have lifts or come tramping.
That sounds like a comfortable amount of time to do South Island, and by going in that direction you leave yourself the choice of doing the far south or zipping straight back to Christchurch if you're out of time.
