hey, i think the best places you should go are of course to bondi in Sydney, such a lovely place.
also if you are planning to do the east coast the Fraser Island was my best experience- there is many lakes, sand and beautiful beaches.

In twelve days you'll only scratch the surface but my first twelve days would be something like five nights around Cairns for the Great Barrier Reef (try Fiztroy Island - closer and cheaper), Daintree, the Skywalk and Baron Falls, Port Douglas and Mossman Gorge, two nights at Yulara for Ayer's Rock and the Olgas, five nights in Sydney for the city sights and for the Blue Mountains.
Then next time look at Darwin, Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth, followed by Adelaide, Canberra and Tasmania. And try a road trip - Perth to Darwin is spectacular as is Alice Springs to Darwin via Katherine Gorge.
I probably love Australia more than New Zealand!
