Hello everyone
I am traveling extensily around the world. Right now I am located in Tuscany Italy.
I travel for my job and fun as well. Travel industry changed dramatically in the last twenty years, but I still love to travel. Let share same idea or experience.
Hey Jamie, sorry for the spammer-wannabes above. Don't know why this thread happened to attract them, and we err on the side of caution with removing them, since every so often they aren't spammers, but just confused and well-meaning fellow travellers who didn't quite understand what they were replying to.
Anyway, three day trips are always a bit of a problem, I think. Not quite long enough to be worth travelling out far, except perhaps for some city trips if there's a decent direct flight. Here's a couple of suggestions which I've enjoyed lately (or am currently planning):
- London; go see a musical or two (fly on London City!)
- Bonn/Köln - there's a good ICE connection, and you could make it either a city trip, or from Bonn take the S-bahn to Königswinter, and hike the Drachenfels and part of the Rheinsteig. Autumn is perfect for this.
- Luxembourg!
- Stockholm, if you're going relatively early during autumn.
I'm personally never too fond of Belgium cities, but many people do enjoy Antwerp, Brugge, Gent, etc, and they're of course awfully convenient. But personally, given the choice, I'd rather explore some of the lesser known German cities. Bielefeld, Kassel, Bremen, Düsseldorf, etc - they're not spectacular, but certainly have their charms, and can easily entertain one for a couple of days, plus should be easily reachable.
For a bit of a longer trip (or, I guess, if you're not as picky as me about spending a significant percentage of the trip just getting somewhere), I can really recommend Ronda during the off season (so starting from late autumn). Fly to Malaga, and take a bus there (or rent a car). Bit of a drive, but through gorgeous scenery, and without the tourists, Ronda is a wonderful city to fully explore in a day or two, with excellent restaurants, some pretty decent hiking and a lot of sidetrip possibilities nearby. (But really, do Ronda during a multi-week Andalusia trip in winter to remember what sunlight and blue skies looked like again. There's so much which is nice near there. Sevilla, Cadiz, Granada, Cordoba, etc, etc...)

Anyway since I live near the broader of Belgium I don't need to hit that. But you are wrong Belgium is a great place to explore. You just need to know where you are going. Antwerp so far makes #2 favorite city in Europe behind Madrid or Barcelona. The shopping is off the hook and the restaurants cater to everyone. Belgium also has the Ardene region which is full of hiking camping and kayaking.
Im going to look into Ronda that sounds like something I would like. I also had interest in Malaga. I have not been there either. Also I still need to hit Rome. Hard to believe I have not seen that yet...Thanks for the tips!

Knowing the owner of travellerspoint (Peter) personally, I can assure you that he hates those posts as much as anyone, and would never pay anyone to create such worthless 'content'. This forum might not be the most active, but it's still plenty busy enough with real travellers posting. My leading theory is that these are low wage spammers trying to set up "trusted" forum accounts which won't immediately have their posts removed when they drop a link. It's taking them longer than hoped for to learn that this tactic really doesn't work here.

*g* Fair enough. I'm probably just suffering from my parents dragging me all over Belgium when I was a child. Went on a hiking trip to the Ardennes two years ago, and while that was pleasant enough (good food at least!), the landscape just didn't excite me at all. (Not just in comparison with the Norwegian highlands or the Andes, but also compared to hiking destinations in Spain or Germany.)
(Oh, and while shopping is not really my thing, I want to bet that the aforementioned Bonn can totally take on Antwerp.)

Malaga is quite far down my list of favorite Andalucian cities, but still definitely worth visiting in its own right for a day or two. The Alcazaba doesn't begin to compare to the Alhambra or even the Alcazar in Sevilla (which I love!), but still offers enough of interest to keep you entertained for half a day. In that region, also consider Arcos de la Frontera, or for hiking, the often overlooked Sierra de Grazalema.
And since the travel time to Ronda didn't seem to be fazing you, here's another recommendation: Saxon Switzerland. In the far southeast corner of Germany, and the far north of the Czech republic, there's this amazing area of dozens of table hills. They tend to have more or less strenuous 30-60 minute hikes to their top through mossy rock-filled gullies, and then great options for exploring them from above. Most are close enough together, and there's enough hiking routes, that you can loop two or three together into a single dayhike. I personally wouldn't go there for less than a week, but...

I would recommend Prague or Brno as places to visit. Beautiful, fun cities... in fact the whole Czech Republic is just fantastic!
