I am planning a trip from the east coast to the northern Denver area and I have heard that the drive through Kansas is just miserable. I would hate to hang myself in the last stretch of my trip because of boredom. I am willing to go the extra 50 miles out of the way for better scenery. Any opinions on which might be better? Maybe some nifty stops along the way of either?
Well, no doubt I-80 is better, but let me be blunt--there is not a whole lot of difference between the two routes.
I have driven both routes on at least 3 occasions (long story on why this is true that I won't bore you with). I usually try to do the drive in one day--leaving either Omaha and going to Denver--or leaving Kansas City and going to Denver. The only thing better about the Nebraska drive is that you are following the Platte river for most of the way across the state (making for a little more scenery and green trees) than driving across Kansas which is mostly just a lot of wheat fields or (in the western part of the state) dry brush.
Enjoy
