Travel to Jordan

It's possible to share a driver or take a minibus.

Here's what I did in 2010, so prices may be different now:

My hotel in Madaba (near Amman) discovered that a traveler in another hotel was looking for someone to share a ride in a private car to Petra (Wadi Musa). I agreed to pay half the 40 JOD price. We started at 6:30. The journey, via the Kings Highway, took nearly six hours, with stops at Wadi Mujib, Karak Castle and the Dina Biospshere Reserve.

The return via the Desert Highway from Wadi Musa to the Wahadat (South) bus station in Amman by minibus cost 5 JOD. The minibus left at 8:25 and arrived at 11:40, with a 15-minute rest stop at 10:10. That's according to information in my journal.

I've had no problems hiring drivers in many of the countries I've visited. Hotels and B&Bs can help make arrangements, particularly if the hotel has excellent reviews for service. You can get an idea of the cost from fellow travelers, so you can compare that with the price you are being quoted. There are other ways to find good drivers. I found an excellent driver in Ethiopia through the Bradt guide forum on Ethiopia. I used the driver twice for month-long trips in that country to areas such as Gambela National Park on the border with South Sudan; and Turmi in the southern part of the country.

P.S. The Jordanian dinar has averaged 0.71 from 2005 until 2015. At the current exchange rate (from xe.com), 1 JOD is equal to $1.41 US.
