You'll find plenty of generalities on the forums and across the site. To get much in the way of direct responses you'll need to ask specific questions or at least lead us with where you hope to travel to.

(I spent quite a bit of time crafting my reply there, and the original poster never posted again, so I feel it was a bit of a wasted effort, which I hope will be redeemed somewhat by linking it again here.)

You've come to the right place, but as Andyf mentioned, you'll have much better luck getting your questions answered if you make them more specific. Maybe you have a specific, or even a vague - destination in mind?
First you need to make a travel blog than start
I went to Australia last year and was pretty much the same as you, few tips:
-make a plan, even if it is only for a month
-go out and do things even if you are on your own
-if maybe you consider Australia - take PLENTY of money - as I found out its an expensive place to travel
-if going on your own, book a tour even if its only for a week - I completely regretted not doing that
-if you want to work somewhere, look for jobs before you go.
-try and embrace everything, and don't look back on your past life.
-book hostels before you get there.
-don't take too much stuff.. so annoying lugging it about
I'll give you a brief insight into my travelling experience, very little but it may help.
Last year, I went to Australia on my own as I was fed up of living every day the same and I just really didn't know what I wanted from my life. I left still being with someone and got there and was truly like shocked. Its hard to explain, but it just hit me that I was on my own and was kind of like what do I do. I booked into a hostel and met some nice girls, and luckily met up with two girls on here who I had been speaking to. In the end they wernt who I thought they would be, and I kind of ended up sitting in the hostel skyping my boyfriend/mum all the time. In the end I decided to come home and honestly it was such a hard decision to make.. not trying to scare you but do be sure your ready to leave home and experience something that will ultimately change your life. Like I said above, making a plan is important I went without a clue really of what I wanted to do, hadn't researched and ended up sitting around not know what to do with myself. I don't know if you are a confident person or not but do talk to other people in the hostel as some people will be on their own too, and even if they're not, make friends as it will make the experience ten times more enjoyable. Sorry if I went on a bit but theres probably loads more, I guess my experience wasn't the best because I had things going on back at home that I couldn't stop thinking about, but I would always say go for it, because it will be the best time of your life if you embrace everything and truly want to be travelling etc.

Exciting times ahead of you ... In addition to the points and direction, already mentioned, my suggestion would be to start with what experiences would you like to aspire to or build, how long could you travel for initially and this will help you then ask some specific questions to the group?
For example, my first solo Overseas trip when I was 17 was to Fiji. I was working, and had 2 weeks leave and was looking for a safe, fun trip that wasn't too expensive. That was 25 years ago, and I now travel every year. That first trip helped wet my appetite for travel and gave me a goal to work towards.

I think you should start with a budget. Know how much money you have available for your holiday each day AFTER paying for your plane tickets. Once you know how much money you have available decide how much of that budget you can afford for your hotel room. Then fit your accommodation to what you can afford.
The time the time of the year you travel can affect the cost of your plane tickets. But it depends on where you begin from. For example from some countries plane tickets are more expensive late November through late January. Especially more expensive Christmas and New Years holiday season. (If you are from a country that is cold during November through February many people think of flying to a warm country! Airlines like to get a little more money from you!) There are cheaper times of the year to fly long distance.
When you ask for help on travel forums also include where you are starting from. I flip through the profile section to see what country the poster is from. Good idea to put something that identifies your country but actual birthday and real names is up to you. (Too much private information on public forums could come back to bite you in the a$$!)
If starting in Europe you do have a lot of train and bus travel available. But starting in Europe or N. America and want to fly from there to Asia my recommendation is to fly round trip to save money. Some long distance flights cost about the same for one way vs round trip. Or if starting in N. America and want to fly to Europe consider round trip plane tickets. Once you are overseas you have other choices of transportation. It might save you a lot of money to use a cheap ride to get back to the city you first fly into. Always compare round trip plane tickets vs flying one way.
You need to research visa requirements. Some countries may require "proof of onward travel" where you may have a problem just leaving your home airport. (This "proof of onward travel" usually means a plane ticket out of the country you want to fly into.)
Buy a Lonely Planet Travel Guide. My advice is if flying long distance plan on at least 2 weeks. Some countries will not allow you to work to augment your spending money. Depends on the country. So, if you plan on staying away from home for a long time figure that the money you start with is what you have to live off of while you are gone.
