Hello all so I'm heading of in January to travel around a bit of Asia I want to cover Malaysia Indonesia and the philippines. Just wanted some help and advise about where to go first and what the best route would be to take to cover all three country's ? Any help would be useful or if you are heading that way in the new year ? Thanks guys Katie

How long are you going to spend on this trip? In Malaysia I visited Kuala Lumpur, Malacca, Cameron Highlands, Taman Negara and the Perhentian Islands. In Indonesia I travelled from Jakarta to Bali in 2 weeks, visiting Pangandaran, Yogjakarta, Seloliman Nature reserve, Mt Bromo Lovina and Ubud.
I did it on 2 separate trips though. Air Asia is probably your best option to get between the 3 countries.

You could perhaps go to the Gilli Islands too then - they are supposed to be stunning. I wanted to go but ran out of time and money!
From the places I've listed, I'd say don't miss Yogjakarta as you can visit Borobudur from there which is a must- see, and also seeing Mt Bromo at sunrise is definitely worth a 3am start for (take some warm clothes for that)! Ubud is gorgeous so you might want to hang around there for a few days. If you like snorkelling or diving, it's pretty good from Lovina.

I'm not sure sure of the route or way to get to see all three, however can highly recommend - Sabah, Borneo Malaysia. We've been there twice! Absolutely amazing .. mountains through to the sea, and quiet reasonably priced too.

Hi Katie! I think budget airlines like air asia and cebu pacific are best options if you want to travel these countries. Indonesia and Malaysia are south of the phil. So it depends on your choice if you start from the south or vice versa. Where are u staying in the philippines? Is it your first time to travel here?

I'd probably leave Malaysia right in the middle, since one of the cheapest airlines to use to get around SE Asia (Air Asia) has a hub there and you'll find most international flights end up at Kuala Lumpur at some point. If you're not concerned with budgeting then you could do it whenever. I've also used Cebu Pacific and they're good too (but I just flew with them in the Philippines).
January will be rainy season in Indonesia - all the way until March (I was there in April and it was still raining lots too, let up mostly by May). January and February bring cooler weather to SE Asia, north of the equator so that's a great time to be there. The longer you leave Malaysia, the hotter it'll get there (and it can really wear you down). It's worth checking out your destinations in the Philippines too to see what the climate will be like there as each region is a bit different.
Borneo is great! Earlier this, there's been some warnings there for dangerous activity targeting tourists, also in the south of the Philippines. It was too bad, because I wanted to go back to try some of the spectacular diving (Borneo). I mainly stuck around Mt Kinabalu when I went in 2012. Went white water rafting, on a tour around Mt. Kinabalu, explored the city, and ate great food. Sarawak, though I've never been sounded really fun as well. Also visited Penang, KL, Melacca, Ipoh (to see a cave), and Langkawi.
I'll second Yogyakarta and the surrounding temples and Mount Bromo. They're stunning! You can get a tour to Bromo and Ijen crater from Yogyakarta then at the end they'll take you to Bali via ferry and bus. So starting in Java and going east is pretty easy to do, assuming you're not going west of that to see the orangutans. Gilis are easy to reach from Bali. Flores has some spectacular diving if you're interested. Our experience on Lombok wasn't the best. Avoid Senggigi if you can. Climbing Mt. Rinjani (volcano) was beautiful, but probably the hardest trek I've ever done (especially with some rain).
