Morocco with kids is wonderful. The Sahara Desert is like a huge playground. Moroccans love children. I recommend flying into Marrakech and then exploring out from there. We offer cultural tours if that's of interest to you: -snip-
As for tips:
1. Put aside enough time to travel to the desert. Three days is a very rushed trip and difficult with kids. Five days is better, depending on what you want to do along the way.
2. Petite taxis in Marrakech are especially difficult for tourists. They will want to establish a price with you, but instead require that they turn the meter on (shell conter). By law, they have to use the meter (unless coming and going from airport / hotel). They will typically try to get you to pay 50 dirhams wherever you go, but it's unlikely you'd pay more than 15 when using the meter. The petite taxis can only take 3 people at a time (again, by law) - so you may want to split up into twos.

4. Morocco is very safe - just keep phones and cameras close to your body at all times or out of sight. Straps of bags should be nearest to the wall when walking in the medina so that mo-ped drivers don't slip their arms into the strap.

Morocco loves children and the winter is my favourite time of year - especially in the Sahara.
Either take lots of time, or decide what you really want to see. Morocco is much bigger than it looks on a map!
Do stay in the Riads, do get lost in the medinas. Do learn a little Arabic. Do use an occasional official guide, and avoid the fake guides.
Avoid the buses and use the trains whenever you can.
Don't hire a tiny self drive car.
Eat fish in Essaouira, ride camels in the Sahara, dance with snakes in Marrakech, loose your head to Sufi rhythms in Fes and get stoned in Chefchaouen!
Thank you markwillen! Lots of good advice. I normally don't like to use guides when travelling, but was thinking we would for Morocco, and after your recommendation, will definitely look into hiring legit tour guides.

Incidentally, the Petit Taxi's have been reformed and the situation is much improved. Fares are actually ridiculously cheap, with 2 euros taking you from one side of the town to another. Tip generously.
I think the comments about handbags etc are rather superfluous. Morocco's statistics on personal security are better than Spain or Italy. Pickpockets are not rife and crime, whilst not unknown, is unusual.
In 16 years in Morocco I've never been pickpocket'd.
Petite Taxi reformation hasn't reached Marrakech.
Petit Taxi's in Marrakech are now required to display their tarifs and as a result the driver's are being better behaved. It will be a different story very late at night, but I honestly can't remember the last time I had a Petit taxi that didn't turn the meter on voluntarily
