I have great memories of traveling on old Route 66 in the USA. It was before there were a lot of major highways replacing it. It is sad that much of the old route is gone. Does anyone have any great memories of the fabulous route?
The Disney movie "Cars" is a story about how the new Interstate bypassed the nostalgic cities that made Route 66 what it was. The route is also covered by many books and also the subject of movies and documentaries and even the British TV show "Top Gear" which celebrated the journey.
I remember it well--but I also remember how long it took to get to the places we were heading when only being able to go about 35 miles an hour (the limit on much of Route 66 when you realize that it was largely a single-lane highway and you had to constantly fight to pass slow trucks on the road). Guess you can tell that I have good and bad remembrances of the road.
For me, the scenery is the good part--and the interstate doesn't bypass most of that--so I'm okay with it. I do go out of my way to see some stuff not on the interstate--even if not on Route 66. For example, going to Santa Fe (which was on Route 66) even though it means taking a different interstate (I-85) that the main east-west one (I-40). Also, visiting Sedona (which is not on Route 66) is always a must when going through Arizona, as it is one of the highlights of the state (along with the Grand Canyon and the Petrified Forest).

Your experiences on Route 66 sounds similar to some of mine. I admit that there were times that you would be behind a slow truck. However, there were times when riding through the desert when those trucks would go faster than you would.
I also passed near the Grand Canyon and the Petrified Forest and stopped to visit these places. People still go to the Grand Canyon, but I do not hear a lot of people talking about visiting the Petrified Forest. I did not appreciate the old Route 66 back then as much as I do now. I guess we move on but still have our memories.
