I've done that very train you mention. I've also done in a hard seat (basically a seat on the train) and to be honest, it wasn't the worst case (though the sleeper would be much preferred, but hey, when ya gotta save money, ya go desperate ha). Anywho, I think the train is the best option in terms of expense particularly and it goes over night so you save on accommodation that way too. Transport in China can be a bitch and it takes hours to drive such short distances. But I would suggest taking the train from Kunming, personally.
