Hi,
1.) Google, "distance from Mumbai to Goa" and you'll see that the driving distance is a little over 600 km. Google maps out the route for you.
2.) Google, "car rental in Mumbai" and you get lots and lots of choices.
Personally I would be taking the train to Goa (there are MANY options) and hiring a local driver upon arrival.

Terry's suggestion of a train is spot on!
From memory five years ago, we left Mumbai on a sleeper train at about 10pm and arrived in Margao after a great night's sleep at around 9am and took a taxi to Palolem Beach (45 minutes away).

Go by train but sleeper class in day time.. You will enjoy the surroundings and the scenic view on the way. We went by train and there was rainy time so the experience was extra ordinary. Then, in Goa hire a cab (a qualis or innova)..
