A year ago we went anti-clockwise from Beijing to Shanghai via Xian, Chengdu, Chongqing and Yichang. Xian to see the Terracotta Army and do the Hua Shan plank walk, Chengdu to see the pandas and Chongqing to Yichang on a boat on the Yangtze River - all worth doing if you have the time but not exactly on a direct route from Shanghai to Hong Kong. As well as the boat, we traveled around on trains - easy to do since your friend speaks Chinese. Whatever you decide, enjoy China!
Thanks Borisborough for your advice! My plans have had to change though, and I'm now going to fly in and out of Hong Kong. I've created a new post asking about recommendations for that if you're interested in answering ...
