I see you are from the UK so can only offer general advice as I'm not sure what is offered over there...but in case it helps - in Australia two great options are:
1. A 'travel money card' which is a card unassociated with your bank which you load up with money and use just like a bank card overseas. There are costs associated with getting one but once you have one there are typically no transaction fees like you would receive if you were using your bank card. Maybe similar products are offered in the UK?
2. A credit card for which there are no transaction fees, including for withdrawing cash. In Australia there is a credit card called the '28degreescard'. I have been using it for years now. If you transfer money onto the card so that your balance is above your spending limit, then you can take cash out of an atm (any atm in the world) for free (as long as the balance remains above the spending limit). Again, maybe something similar is offered over there?

In Thailand, ATMs (all of them) charge you a 180 baht (6USD) withdrawal fee on top of what your home bank might charge.
Travel cards are good - but in some places (like Thailand) cash is king and you have to make sizeable withdrawls.
