Hello Everyone.
VieTraveller - I travel to Vietnam every year because it's the friendliest place I've ever been to (I have traveled the world except for Africa and S. America).
I think people should know that some places are more dangerous than others - the most street crime targeting tourists is in Saigon and Nha Trang. Seems to me the biggest danger there is not food, but the dangerous highways (and the sleeper buses that use them!)
All developing countries have their problems and scams (we also have a few thousand in the developed world), but they generally cost us pennies on the dollar in Vietnam. I am not a fan of Vietnamese cabs - I prefer to walk or fly.
Your very best assets are YOU, the Vietnamese people! It's truly worth the effort to travel here just to meet a few of your fellow citizens. As far as safety goes, I feel far safer in Vietnam than in the United States at the moment.
(the shoeshine boys make me smile - who else would try to polish my sandals or sneakers!)
