Hello,
It's hard enough to comment on Visa/Transit questions when you give no background details regarding your nationality or what kind of Visa was denied and when... but it's impossible to guess when you give zero details regarding your flights.
Call your airline, travel agent and look at the airport website. Only you know which airline(s) you arrive and depart on and which Terminal you land at and which one you fly out of so you can decipher whether you go through British Immigration/Customs, or not.
Cheers,
Terry
Sorry I am from Canada and I was denied a tier 5 youth mobility visa for the United Kingdom about 6 months ago due to a criminal record. On the visa denial mail I received it never once said I wasn't aloud to enter the UK it just said my work visa was denied. I don't know if having a criminal record prohibits me from just vacationing there or even stopping there during a connecting flight
Yes, since they know about your criminal record you should apply for a Tourist Visa before visiting the UK.

Since only you know about your flights only you can determine if you'll be safe during transit because only you will know if you have to go through UK Immigration. Follow the advice I already gave you.
Good luck.
Cheers,
Terry
