rio amazonas

Hello,
I am travelling through south America on the 11th of February and have most of the route planned however part of this route includes taking a boat from Iquitos (peru) to Leticia (Colombia) I am slightly worried after watching a documentary about cocaine farms in the area (particularly Santa Rosa) a place where we need to get our passports stamped. I would just like some reassurance from someone that may have taken this route before and felt safe or if we should avoid it and find a new way of getting to Colombia from peru.
Thank you!
Holly

I know people who have traveled the Iquitos/Santa Rosa/Leticia/Tabatinga route. But they did so two or three years ago, so I don't know what the current situation is. There is a lot of information online about the trip. The TripAdvisor forums, and others, might have some updated information.

I looked at the Travellerspoint map of your South American trip. How do you propose to travel from Kuelap (Chachapoyas) to Iquitos; and from Leticia to San Augustin, Colombia? Iquitos is reachable only by boat or air. There are no roads. The same goes for Leticia. I was in Iquitos in 2014; and have a friend who lived and worked there.

Traveling alone in the jungle is fraught with risk; and so is crossing difficult porous borders, particularly in areas where there is substantial drug trafficking. Personally, I wouldn't do it; and I've been to quite a few rough places.

Thank you for your reply and advice. They'll be two of us travelling together which should help. I know from my lonely Planet book Leticia has a major airport main roads and buses leaving daily to major cities and towns so getting from there shouldn't be a problem. We'll have to get a small flight to Iquitos. Still deciding weather go this way or not though! will check out Trip advisor.
Thanks

Please re-read your Lonely Planet guide on Leticia. From what I gather, it says Leticia is 800 kilometers away from the nearest Colombian highway.

If you look at the maps, there are no major roads in and out of Iquitos and Leticia. You either go by boat or fly.

Even if there are two of you, crossing the jungle without a guide is perilous. I know this from personal experience.

This TripAdvisor traveler report from 2012 might provide some useful information on traveling to Leticia: http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g317037-i13767-k5378204-The_Rundown_on_Leticia_Amazon-Leticia_Amazonas_Department.html

I'm now researching my own plans to travel from northern Brazil to French Guiana. So I'm doing the same thing you're doing ... finding out whether that is reasonable or not.

I know from my lonely Planet book Leticia has a major airport main roads and buses leaving daily to major cities and towns so getting from there shouldn't be a problem.

From my Lonely Planet guide: "... As the capital city of the Amazonas province, Leticia is the largest city for hundreds of kilometers yet still looks and feels very much like a small frontier town. It's located on the Amazon River at the crossroads – or more accurately, the cross-river – point where Colombia, Brazil and Peru meet. Leticia is located about 800km from the nearest Colombian highway..."

Cheers,
Terry

Thank you both. Im not too worried about leaving Leticia. I was more looking for information on the route from Iquitos to Leticia but will keep checking trip advisor enjoy brazil!
