Hi Dave,
First off, Romanian currency is RON. 1 EUR = 4.4 RON. 1 pound = 6.22 RON. I know you use only pounds but i'm more used to think everything in EUR (so make the conversions yourself).
Compared to UK, things are cheaper here. A few examples:
- Beer (in a pub): 2-3 Eur. Obviously you can find more expensive ones but this is for standard beer
- Restaurant: a meal (1 dish + 1 drink) = 10 Eur
- Taxi (super super cheap) : half an euro/km. We simply love taxis for being so cheap. Note: take only the ones that have the price marked on the door (1.39 RON)
- Shopping Malls: similar to UK (everything is about brands, obviously). You can also try some Christmas presents from University Square (there's a Christmas market there)
If you have any spare time for short day tours (within Bucharest), i could help you with a tailor-made itinerary. There's always the option for a full-day tour. This means seeing places like Bran Castle (Dracula), Rasnov Fortress, Peles Palace (summer place of the royal family) or Brasov (with its incredible medieval town laying beneath Mount Tampa).
Cheers,
Mihai
