Me and my gf have both done the Australian backpacker travels over the past 2 years and know Byron Bay is the spot to be for the right vibes, we're currently in Bali but the plan is to come over to Aus early January and head straight to Byron Bay to live for a while. So right now we are looking for like minded people to share a home with and get a little Byron crew together while doing so.
Both the Arts factory Backpackers and Byron Beach Resort backpacks has long term backpackers. In fact most backpacker hostels seem to have a few that never leave. Arts Factory has a whole tent village set up at the back and Byron Beach Resort has a great vibe and the nudie beach is right outside! Both those hostels offer free accommodation when you drive their bus for a few hours or do kitchen clean up duties.
This is what most backpackers do these days when they want to stay somewhere short term, (under a year) as renting something means deposits, utilities payments and more deposits, and is frankly out of the reach of most backpackers unless they score a really good job in their field of expertise.
