We have two children (ages 9 & 6) and one small dog, maybe two dogs by the time we take this trip. We are planning a 3 month Summer driving trip from NY across America to CA and then back, with intent to cover most of the major landmarks that the kids learn about in school. I believe that mapping the trip is the easiest part. I am looking for advice from people who have survived such an adventure.

We are looking at vehicle choices and lodgings. Camping our way across America seems like it could be the most economical option. There are campsite chains across the USA with memberships. Any advice here?
Vehicle choices. Fuel economy is a small consideration, but I believe that space and comfort are more important for such a long trip. Trying to pack everyone into our Honda Odyssey with a tow-behind trailer for 3 months would likely be disastrous! The wife would probably abandon us all in CA if not sooner! So we've tossed around ideas ranging from a conversion van towing a popup camper to a 23' standard RV, maybe from Cruise America. Of course, if we choose the RV route, we have to decide whether to rent for 3 months or buy a used RV and sell it after the trip. Unless we enjoy it so much we decide to keep it for future trips!
If you have survived a similar trip, please donate your two cents in a reply! Thank you!
I think camping is a good idea. Just find safe places where to camp. And since you're traveling with kids and a pet, make sure you rent a vehicle that has enough space (and even an extra space) since both kids and pets often move around.
