My wife and I are planning a two-month vacation to Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, and anywhere else we can get to in the amount of time we have (Indonesia, Thailand, French Polynesia). I have a few questions mainly about planning/scheduling:
It really depends on what you want to get out of it - 4 weeks wouldn't be long enough to explore all of Australia - the country is about the size of Europe. However, you would get a very good taste of the country/culture/land.
Also it depends on what you actually like to do, ie. if you like the beaches you'll I'd suggest to stick to the northern half of the east coast at that time of year. If you want to experience the desert/outback/get off the beaten track then youll probably wanna check out Queensland/Northern Territory/Western Australia. For cities/night life/sporting events you'll want to include Sydney/Melbourne.
Anyway take a look into what places you really want to visit, then select a route that is not too spread out (ie. stick mainly to perhaps just 2 states). The most common thing that most tourists do with a few weeks time would be to stick to the east coast (ie. between Cairns and Sydney).
I think 3-4 countries is doable - although you'll just have to put up with only having a limited taste of 1-2 countries. On the other hand, the variety may also be appealing. Really it's how many places within each country that you'd have to consider (ie. with an average of say 3 nights in each location then you're looking at 20 places - I'd prob try not to do more of this or it'd be more of a whirlwind tour)
