hey im 21 travelling alone and trying to fit in as much as possible in 5 weeks along the east coast, now is it best to start at the top or at the bottom, im traveling from mid july 2011. any ideas anyone as i was starting in sydney then heading up but now im not a sure.
please someone give advice to a concerned traveller wanting to make the best outta oz!
Im not entirely sure as i have never travelled before but by reading most people's posts, majority of them seem to start at Cairns and work there way down the East Coast, thats what im going to do when i go
im sure you will get replies soon from people who have done both ways.

At that time of year for 5 weeks, I'm not sure if it would make too much difference which way you go.
I would probably lean very slightly towards heading southward rather than north, but weather-wise there isn't much in it. Sydney will probably feel a bit chilly in mid-July, but there won't be a huge difference 5 weeks later.
I would say it's a coin toss decision!
When does it start getting warmer again after the winter months as im not sure wether to go March/April time or Oct/Nov time. I dont like it too hot anyway and I don't imagine it really ever gets that cold in the winter months or am i wrong?

It doesn't get cold if you compare it to UK temperatures, however it can still feel chilly when it's cloudy & windy - in winter when it's sunny and little wind it can feel quite pleasant in Sydney.
When I first came here on a working holiday I arrived in Sydney in July. I was surprised how cold I felt to begin with, and was wearing a fleece jacket most of the time. Here in Melbourne, winter feels more like autumn in southern England.
Further north you go, the warmer it would be. My wife, who is from Brisbane originally, said the summer sun in southern England feels similar to the winter sun in Brisbane. However saying that, some areas of Queensland (e.g. Toowoomba, Warwick) can get to (and below) freezing point in winter believe it or not! And in Victoria & New South Wales we have some ski fields!

Yeah so it pretty much seems like i can go whenever and it will be ok, As long as I don't go during Dec/Jan/Feb as I wouldnt be able to handle the heat, im from Aberdeen in Scotland it's always freezing here.
I think I might try and plan for Aug/Sept next year as it will give me more time to save.

Yeah, but for people living here houses can feel really cold - hardly any insulation, and usually no heating. And if the temperature does drop in Brisbane (i.e. below 20) then the locals really feel it!!

I come from southern England (Reading area) and moved here 4 years ago, and in Melbourne it gets too hot for me - especially 2 years ago when it hit 46 degrees! I love the winter in Melbourne, but hate the summer - in England I like the summer but hate the winter.
So i think Aug would be a good time to go then when it's not TOO hot and cooler than the summer months, If i was starting in Cairns and working my way down? I even think 25 is hot and with travelleing with backpacks etc I don't know how i would cope with it being over 30 haha.
