tour biking

I am planning to ride a bicycle from Arkansas to Brazil then buy a VW bug and drive it back: If you can help with advice on:

*Overall safety in countries... you're covering a huge amount of real estate so like anywhere it varies WILDLY throughout your entire route. Common sense and street smarts will be invaluable.

*Road qualities Especially in Panama and Nicaragua... you're covering a huge amount of real estate so like anywhere it varies WILDLY throughout your entire route. (Sorry, couldn't resist.)

*Laws regarding car registration, and entering the U.S. with a unregistered vehicle... Google is your friend: http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/trade/basic_trade/importing_car.xml

*A ferry from Panama To South America... doesn't exist... lots of other options though, everything from sail boats (Colon to Cartagena) to fast-boats down the east side of the Darien Gap...

Have fun.

Cheers,
Terry

Thanks terry, Loads of help

I guess my questions were to poorly phrased. I guess the question is does anyone know of an area that for sure there will be road issues? I am at square one, I have never been to most of the countries I am going to, so it isn’t details on each country I will pass through but which cities are so insane I should completely avoid them. I can handle myself obviously, but I think caution is best.

And as far as the boats, I have heard some things about freight boats that travel and that can take cars. Does anyone know anything about that?

but it's a fairly sobering read. Honestly, you need to do a lot of research in terms of your route.

There are cargo ships taking cars from Panama to South America but they generally don't accept passengers.

It's a great way to get around the Darien Gap.

Cheers,
Terry
