As always, it's best to check with a travel health provider. But, it sounds like you have already. The costs sound about right but the needs do not.
: If you are planning to be involved with wildlife rescue programs and/or spending most of your time in rural areas (camping, etc.), then rabies is not a bad idea. The best defense is common sense and not petting stray animals. The prophylactic vaccinations will give you an added 24 hours to receive treatment. I took them for years because of my previous employment. I have opted out of boosters for years no matter where I travel. I use my common sense instead. (Don't feed the monkeys.)
: I would skip this one too, personally speaking. It is prevalent in Asian agricultural areas where mosquitoes thrive. As with malarial areas, the use of insect repellent (35-50% DEET) is a great defense - if you remember to use it. The vast majority of the cases reported to WHO are those of the local populations working in the agricultural industry - not travelers.

Normally I'd say skip the shots, but then I saw "India" - better get the lot! Seriously, all I have is the Hep A series. Don't load that pack too much - you want it light, and leave room for gifts/treasures picked up along the way. I get along fine with just 40L, but maybe you're female and need space for multi-shoes, etc? They do have toilet paper and all the rest in the undeveloped world now!

You would be fine without the rabies and JE jabs. But, as always, it comes down to a personal comfort level. I have just double-checked WHO and the CDC on their recommendations for India. I stand behind my previous post.
Realize stories are just that - stories. Whether heard or read, if it is one person's experience, it doesn't mean it will be yours.
Yes, travelers do just turn up at certain destinations with little or no planning. Since you have some idea of an itinerary, check out what visas may be needed to move from country to country and if they can be obtained at the borders. That information can be found online.

Just out of curiosity...
Did you receive just one jab for rabies and one for JE? Unless things have changed drastically very recently, both are a series of 3 vaccinations over the course of a month. Doing the full course will definitely give you better protection against JE while rabies still only extends your time to reach medical care by 24 hours (as long as you have taken the rabies series). Rabies honestly laughs at just one prophylactic injection. I don't mean to sound harsh in any way. But, just one injection does not allow your body to build enough antibodies to extend your time receiving care. One jab for JE can make a difference.

Yes I've had a courses of each so I've had three jabs for Rabies and three jabs for Jap E... Hate needls too but had to be done!!
Where abouts have you travelled too? Would you say our 65L backpacks are ridiculously too big for a four month + trip?

Yes. For travel in warm countries via hotels/hostels with no camping then 40 litres is MORE than enough - with lots of room left over...
