Can't comment for South America. South East Asia however I can:
Thailand is unmissable and probably your best gateway into the region. You should really see the north and south of Thailand. You could easily spend six months here but obviously that would be a waste. I would suggest as a very basic guide start with a route like this:
Thailand (Head North) - Laos - Cambodia - Vietnam - Thailand (South)
Thailand(Bangkok) - Head North towards Chang Rai (experiencing many wonders en route, rain forests, temples, elephants, ancient cities) - Cross into Laos (Land river crossing) - Travel south through down the mekong (stopping at major cities such as Luang Prabang, breath taking waterfalls, amazing natural beauty, amazing people, ancient temples etc) - Cross into Cambodia - Cross into Vietnam - Back to Thailand (head south and experience the beaches on the small islands).
Do some research on that route and see what interests you. If you want to go off the track further consider the Philippines, Indonesia (my favourite), Myanmar and Malaysia. Singapore (Very expensive)
Flights get more expensive when your crossing borders so look at trains, boats and minibuses (that's most of the fun)

Impossible to comment on budget/logistics when you give zero information about where you're flying from.

You're asking about a HUGE piece of real estate so that's an impossible question too. Worry about choosing a route and safety once you've decided where you're going.

CheersT - I was aiming my questions at those who may have done/be planning to do a similar route.
The lack of info is due to the fact that as stated we are in the VERY early planning stages - hence the request for information from people who may have experince of travelling in these areas.

Sam, you missed my point. You asked about "safe routes" through an enormous hunk of real estate that encompasses 20+ countries. At this point in time that's not a logical query.
By that I mean with common sense and the usual street smarts the vast majority of SE Asia and South America (and for that matter most of Planet Earth) is "safe." In other words, there is no specific "route" that someone can tell you to take right now to be "safe" during a trip that you've barely even started planning and at this point don't even have specific destinations in mind...

Terry, I think you have missed the point of my thread.
I am indeed asking about routes (amongst other things) that people who have travelled to these locations have used and they themselves would have considered at that time to be safe. This is a way for us to get a handle on potential starting points.
I was aiming this post at people who had travelled to the area(s) I am interested in and had pointers and/or helpful advice.
The information that IIVIIikejones supplied was useful and constructive as they have personal experience that they can share. They have managed to provide the type of information I was asking for. Whereas some become stuck in the minutea of a particular topic without actually offering anything that could be considered helpful.
All trips have to start somewhere and a forum such as this should be a platform for like minded people to share info and gather some ideas.
Obviously others cant be expected to plan a route that is "safe" for me but people who have already travelled there will have more insight than me.

And as I clearly stated almost everywhere in SE Asia and South America - all 20+ countries - are safe for travel when you use simple common sense and street smarts.
Once you decide which of those many, many countries you want to visit then it's very easy to research the local Do's & Don'ts for any locations that are off the usual beaten tourist path.
You're making this way more complicated than it has to be.

I have been travelling quite abit in south america and would not recomend mexico or bolivia. they feelt the most "dangerous". In Sweden the government have a site with all the world´s countries and their savety recomendations/statuses check for something similar.

How can you offer that kind of advice about Burma when you haven't even visited the country or indeed the continent? It may be politically unstable but it's not considered a dangerous place for tourists; in fact I probably felt safer in Burma than most other places I've visited worldwide. The people are some of the loveliest I've come across and it's a fascinating and rewarding place to visit.
