Peru - Amazon basin

I will be in Peru this coming december andwould like to get a little taste of the amazon. Can any one out there recommend best cities to head to? I read a little about iquitos but it sounds like a bit of a pain to get out there. any and all input is greatly appreciated!

Iquitos only sounds like a pain to get to...

Its a four day boat ride from Yurimaguas for not much money (comparatively speaking of course). Take a good book or two, a hammock and a bottle of rum. I promise you it will be amazing.

Two and a half years ago I needed to get to the atlantic ocean from Peru in the cheapest way possible. The month i spent on those boats, making my way down the entire Amazon river, will be an experience i will always remember.

If you are making it your base for trekking into the jungle make sure you pick the right company as a guide. Although i never went on a tour myself, some of the stories i heard about supposed "Eco" tours that lay out bait for the animals is horrifying. Remember that the chances of seeing a jaguar are very small. They don't want to be seen. Any company who can promise you a sighting of any animal has other tricks up their sleeve.

Really consider the boat journey. Be prepared to eat things you wouldn't normally eat, but know that it is an amazing experience.

Back in 2007 I went down the amazon on a boat stopping off at Luganas and Yurimaguas etc. Nothing better than lying in your hammock watching the world/amazon go by. It really is a spectacular place. So it's a +1 for the boat ride. Also spent a week in Iquitos and that place is just fantastic, full of energy.
