also i was going to go to paris for a week munich and berlin for a week each then onto poland (krakow and warsaw for a week each) before going to russia and starting my route as above but i had to cancle these due to tiem adn budget...do u think it is worth squeezing them in or do u think i should just go straight to russia? because surely flights to poland then a train to russia is cheaper than flights to russia?

Hi Natalie, what period u wl b travelling china...im in china now and wil b going to india from here..let me know ur dates and we can catch up in china and go ahead...u can get in touch wt me on -snip-

[ , no personal details please. ]

You're right, it is a bit of a how long is a piece of string question... for a budgeting estimate for your time in China I would suggest you use some of the following:

Travelling on your own dorm rooms in hostels should be quite cheap and although we usually stay in family rooms, they always seem clean enough... I'd budget for 100rmb (GBP10) a night, and you'd most likely have cash left over. If you know where you'll be, booking ahead often gives you a discount too.

And eating local food is always cheaper too (and often I think better).

In China, most attractions cost less than 100rmb for admission. That being said to do tours eg to The Great Wall, or places that are a bit out of a town where you may need to factor in transport etc, you will need a bit more.

Travelling by train depends on where you're going and which class of the train you choose... seats are cheaper than sleepers, and there are 2 or 3 levels of sleepers on most trains. Also the speed of the trains can vary price. Have a look at ctrip.com for flights - if you know where you want to go you might find cheap flights in advance.

From holidays in Vietnam, Thailand and Malaysia - I'd say that this basically applies there too...

Sorry, my brain is not in gear this morning, so this is a bit all over the shop, and I'll probably think of other useful info later...

it's gr8 u r travelling to india. but i feel 3 weeks for india is very less. There are lots of places u can't afford to miss if u r coming for the first time. Start with New delhi ( Red fort , Qutab Minar, Humayun's tomb, Rastrapati Bhawan and Mughal Gardens ) , Agra ( Taj Mahal, Agra Fort ) , Jaipur ( Amber fort , jaipur palace, Hawa Mahal) , Jaisalmer ( Sand dunes , Golden Fort ) , Jodhpur ( Jodhpur Fort , Palace) and then straight headon to Mumbai and Goa. Goa has some finest beaches in the world so Happy partying and relaxing..... You can also go down south to Chennai, Mysore and Kerela ( the backwaters are famous).

For China:

Definitely travel by 'hard sleeper' on trains, for trips over 5 hours. Even in the daytime, it's nice to lie down and stretch out. 'Soft sleeper' isn't worth the extra cost- there's not that much difference in comfort (hard sleeper isn't really hard). 'Soft seat' is also not worth it. For short trips (Beijing to Tianjin, for example) 'hard seat' should do just fine.

Sometimes, you can get surprisingly cheap domestic airfare- as cheap as the train, and of course a lot more convenient. 'Qunar' website has good deals- if you can get someone to translate.

Always negotiate in hotels, and ask to see the room. I've never paid the rates they put up on the walls- I don't think anyone but gullible foreigners do. The real rates everyone pays are usually about 50% to 70% less. Hotel breakfasts are usually Chinese food, plus bread and jam and (if you're lucky) instant coffee. Better to just skip it, and pick up something at a convenience store.

Taxis are sometimes worth it. Fares start at 8-10 yuan in most places. In smaller cities, you can get almost anywhere for less than 20 yuan (2 GBP). The bus is cheaper, of course, but you have to figure out which bus(es), where to get off, transfer, etc. Fine if you like a challenge, but personally, I think it's rarely worth the hassle. Beijing and Shanghai are exceptions- taxi trips there are very expensive. In Beijing, use the subway, if you can.

Small restaurants (not street stalls) are generally sanitary enough. You can get a simple lunch or dinner for 15- 35 yuan (less than 4 GBP). Chinese food is meant to be shared, though- so see if you can round up some other travellers to dine with you.

Have fun!

hi i will be in india from december21 onwards im starting in goa for xmas and new year then traveling around after hopefully making it to sri lanka bangledesh and nepal while im there. im also traveling alone so if our dates match it would be cool to meet up with anyone doing a simalar journey

hi guys

thank you for all your answers. very helpful.

i originally wanted like 15 grand to spend..or at least 10! but if i go so soon then it will probably be more like 7 grand..maybe even just under

my travle plan roughly:

uk to st petersburg (flights are only like 200 quid)
st petersburg on the trains (trans siberian railway) down through mongolia into china
travel china
down from china into southeast asia..so - thailand cambodia vietnam laos then fly to india and then back home..

i had an orginal plan right down to days times locations, everything...but now i have almost have to start from scratch again because i have had to change my intinery loads

ok so..

st petersburg (3-5 days)
trans siberian railway (3 weeks)
china (1 month) - (originally gonna do 3 months! )
vietnam (4 weeks)
cambodia (4 weeks)
thailand (1 month)
india (1-2 months)
sri lanka (4-5 weeks)

my basic question is.. i think i might be being stupid..will this budget be enough or am i jus being ridiculous?

be grateful for any help

thankyouuu

xx
