Hi
????
I loved CHiang Mai, and i went to a little town called PAI, up north, where the magic caught me and i stayed there for over 10 days.
Regarding the islands there are many, ofcourse...
there are not as nice as near the gulf but there are quiet a few
for me the koh chang island had it all, it was about a 6 hour drive which is much shorter than to the ones on the gulf...
there is the big koh chang and the small koh chang, i went to the big one, but i have heard from people all over thailand that the small koh chang is even more magical.
thats its, hope you enjoy your travels
Phi Phi Island Is amazing, a lot of well known movies have been filmed there. you can see so much in one day there. Its not far from Phuket which is great too. But it is complete opposite direction of Chiang Mai coming from Bangkok
Remember to include Phuket Island on your itinerary... there are lots of activities you can enjoy there like game fishing, snorkeling, diving and a lot more... You may also consider visiting other islands like phang nga bay, khao lak, & phi phi island. :-)
If you go to Chiang Mai I'd recommend Pai too - it's a great little place to stay for a few days and relax. We also did a good day trek into the hills from there.
Ko Samet might be worth checking out as it's only 3-4 hours away from Bangkok.
If you go to the Phuket area, Koh Sok national park is lovely and worth at least a day trip. Phuket itself is quite nice if you get away from the main touristy parts. Krabi is nicer if you're in that part of Thailand.

Hey, thanks for the feedback everyone,
Pai sounds an intersting place, il definetley consider that.
I have 12 days, as an rough iteniary im thinking
fly to bangkok, spend 2 days here
train to chiang mai
spend 5 days here, and 1 in Pai
fly to Phuket
spend a day here
2 days in koh phi phi or one of the surrounding islands
back to phuket to fly home
does that sound ok?
