I am travelling to Venice in December for four days, my first solo trip. I was wondering if anyone could advise me on the best sites and what kind of weather to expect? I know it's going to be very cold and wet! Any advice will be much appreciated, thanks.
Hi Abigail, I've only been there for one day (on a cruise) but I see no-one's replied so here goes for what it's worth...
Wander at random for a bit - let Venice wash over you as the detail in the architecture is everywhere. Buy a good map when you get there, it's a maze. Or accept getting lost!
My pal went over to Murano for a daytrip - glass shops, glassblowing demonstrations. It's small. My pal said the cafe Number 29 was cheap and good.
Beyond that I only know the famous, obvious sights: the Rialto Bridge, the Doge's Palace with the Bridge of Sighs and St Mark's Square. Gondolas are expensive - someone told me 80 euro? If it's just the view from the water (rather than the romance of the gondola) then just travel on a water bus (vaparetto?).
Oh and the park at the far end is meant to be a nice antidote to the muddle of streets.
Hope that helps a little.
Oh and beware restaurant surcharges! Friends have talked about charges on the bill for music when a musician was playing - this was at a premium spot within sight on the Rialto Bridge and levied in addition to a cover charge.
