first time in USA. east coast roadtrip american's style

hi everybody!

I suggest a route that goes past the Space launch center near Cocoa Beach, Florida, then through Daytona Beach, Florida; Savannah, Georgia; Charleston, South Carolina; then north to Norfolk, Virginia. Take the bridge/tunnel across into Maryland from Norfolk (amazing road), then stop at Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. Continue north and take the ferry across from Lewes, Delaware to Cape May, New Jersey. Spend some time at Cape May or nearby Wildwood, then continue north to the casinos at Atlantic City, New Jersey. It's just a short few hours from here on north to New York City.

On the way back south you can take the inland route as follows: south from New York City to Philadelphia (see the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall), then go south to Baltimore, Maryland and its "inner harbor" area. Next go on to Washington DC where you should spend a lot of time. It's a great tourist town with lots to see and many great gardens and memorials. Go south from here to Mount Vernon, Virginia (where you can find the former home of George Washington). Go south from here to Williamsburg, a town that has been preserved so that it still looks like the capital of Virginia that it was back in 1650 or so. It has permanent actors that roam the city and play the part of major characters from the 1700s, when Virginia was one of the two leading states in our battle for independence. Head southwest from here to Charlottesville, where you can see Montecello (the former home of Thomas Jefferson). Civil war battlegrounds can be found in all the area between Williamsburg and Charlottesville--sites such as Chancellorsville were the biggest victories for the south, while Petersburg and the Appromattox courthouse (final site of surrender) were sites of northern victories.

Leaving Charlottesville, head west to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, then south to Asheville, North Carolina. This is where you will find the Vanderbilt mansion of old. South from here go to Atlanta, Georgia--the largest (size and population) city in the entire southeast portion of the United States. From here head south to Orlando, Florida--the location of the Disney mega-resorts as well as some other parks such as Sea World and Universal Studios. It is then a short trip back to Miami.

P.S. Miami is where you fly in--but the resort, action part is in Miami Beach (South Beach) or just a ways north in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Enjoy your trip.

We did a 4 week trip last summer from New York-Chicago-New Orleans-Key West-Miami-New York with alot of stops along the way. The roads are incredible and the view is breathtaking if you skip the interstate and highways. Would recommend niagara falls, north of New York and Savannah, Georgia. We rented a Dodge challenger srt8 and ended up driving just over 5000miles! A long drive but we saw so much of the east side. We spent 3 weeks driving and had 1 week to relax in NY. how long do you plan to stay? I traveled with my girlfriend so i had at least some help driving. Check out rentalcars.com where we found the cheapest deal!

Veimoen,
Normally I don't leave up commercial website lists, but under the circumstances I'm pretty sure you aren't trying to push a site--so I'll leave the rentalcars.com comment. To balance it out, though, I should also mention that people can also find rental cars through travellerspoint's preferred search site (momondo), or through kayak, carrentals, orbitz, or expedia.

In this instance, Giuliano mentioned he has already found the Camaro he will be driving, so a rental reference is not necessary.

Giuliano, there are no thanks necessary--just go enjoy your trip--and then let us know how it went. That's our way of getting satisfaction/thanks--feeling like we helped someone out with their travel plans.

Calcruzer,

Thanks for the input.
Signed up yesterday so i appriciate info and policies.
