I would be interested in hearing answers to this question as well as I am considering doing the same thing. I think I am going to do a CELTA course here in the UK and then hopefully get work abroad.
I´ve been checking both options for myself and would definitely go for CELTA. It´s much more expensive but benefits speak up for themselves. Number one: it doesn´t expire, so if you have some extra money that´s a good choice.
I did my CELTA course at in London; it was more expensive but seemed to be one of the most reputable and well -respected places to do it.
I have been investigating into the TEFL and CELTA choices too
if you are planning in making a career out of it def go for the CELTA
but if you are planning in on doing it for the purposes of going travelling round the globe or for a year then go for TEFL
i am doing a TEFL through i to i, which is only costing me £290 whcih doesnt expiry. if i like my teaching i can upgate it to the level 5 which is the same as the CELTA and woudl cost me £600 odd
depends what your wanting to use your teaching english for i suppose

Hi! As has been said it depends on your plans, and also how much time you want to spend doing the course. I did an on-line tefl with teflexpress and it was very good - better than I expected. You have to be a bit self-disciplined to get it done in the time limit, but I found I learned a lot from it. I did the 120-hour course, and you get a certificate at the end of it. It also prepares you for the TKT test (http://www.cambridgeesol.org/exams/tkt/index.html) if you wanted to do that, it's part of Cambridge University, and the certificate is recognised globally. My brother did the celta, which is way more intensive, and there's a lot of preparatory work to do for the course as well. If you decide to do the online tefl, I'd recommend signing up to Groupon, I got my course for a fraction of the price, the online tefl courses come up on it every so often, so just keep an eye out for it.

Hi everyone! Thanks for all the advice, it's greatly appreciated. After much thought I have decided to enrol onto a CELTA course beginning in the Summer.
If anyone here has worked teaching English in Eastern Europe I would be most interested to here of any institutions or websites you used to find work out there.

Hi I completed my tefl course with i-to-i. You have to be careful because alot of these online course are proparly accredited. As someone else said who did an online course you have to be self disciplined. There are are a choice of course hours and very reasonble prices. The i to i sight is awesome and you can even apply for internships and get your qualification whilst teaching! its up to you how you do it.
